NEW BANYAN OPTIONS FOR VINES PROVIDE ADVANCED 3270/SNA
CAPABILITIES FOR ENHANCED CONNECTIVITY TO IBM ENVIRONMENT
WESTBORO, Mass., May 8, 1990 -- Banyan Systems today announced two
new VINESR options -- Advanced 3270/SNATM and Advanced 3270/SNA
Graphics -- which expand VINES connectivity to the IBM environment
for users who need access to 3270 applications. According to Jim
Allchin, Banyan Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, "With
these offerings, Banyan again demonstrates its leadership in
integrating VINES with the IBM environment, and reinforces its
commitment to meet user needs with technologically superior PC-to-
mainframe networking solutions."
The Advanced 3270/SNA and Advanced 3270/SNA Graphics options for
VINES provide many significant benefits. VINES users gain a single
view of all SNA resources, the ability to pool sessions across the
entire network, and secure access to any SNA service. Whether in a
workgroup or across an entire organization, the VINES Advanced
3270/SNA options enhance information control, productivity and
efficiency down to the workstation level. Users can access and
display multiple, concurrent 3270 screens and a DOS application
without compromising or sacrificing functionality.
As with all VINES options, convenience and integration with other
VINES utilities represent major benefits. For example, Advanced
3270/SNA and the current 3270/SNA option are designed to run off
the same VINES SNA service. Configuration is flexible and fast;
set-up time is minimal. Administrators can set all workstation
parameters through a single client configuration utility, while
retaining the capability to map each Logical Unit (LU) to a
different LU service.
In addition, VINES SNA services are very cost effective because
they run concurrently with other services (such as file, mail,
terminal emulation, etc.) in a single server; separate computers
are not required. The ability to pool sessions among multiple SNA
services (even on different servers) permits network-wide load
balancing and high availability of host resources.
Because the VINES 3270 product set is compatible with IBM standards
-- such as SDLC, Token Ring, 3270 data stream, HLLAPI and LLAPI --
LAN and SNA host administrators can easily integrate the VINES SNA
service into the SNA network. Comprehensive support of 3270
features by Advanced 3270/SNA allows most users of actual 3270
Display Workstations to migrate to DOS machines while retaining SNA
functionality. Terminal emulation and file transfer provides high
performance comparable to actual 3x74 cluster controllers and 3270
Workstations.
Thanks to VINES many unique internetworking attributes, SNA
computer processing capabilities are transparently distributed
across entire organizations regardless of network topologies and
links. This in turn creates an unparalleled application development
environment for in-house and independent software developers. To
meet the needs of these developers, Banyan provides Advanced
3270/SNA Application Programming Interface (API) support which,
when combined with the wide range of APIs previously available for
VINES, lets users tailor their environment or automate repetitive
tasks.
Advanced 3270/SNA Option Brings Comprehensive
3270 Terminal Emulation to VINES Clients
The VINES Advanced 3270/SNA option provides multiple 3270 sessions
and high-performance 3270 workstation emulation for all DOS
clients. By providing compatibility with IBM standards, such as
3270 display and print stream, and remote (SDLC) and local (Token
Ring) connections, the option permits users to migrate easily from
actual single-user 3270 display stations or NETBIOS-based emulators
to a VINES network environment. In particular, Advanced 3270
satisfies the following requirements:
* Support of IBM Model 2,3,4, or 5 screens
* IBM EEHLLAPI 1.21 or LLAPI 2.0-compliant interfaces
* windowing of multiple 3270 sessions
* Up to 5 concurrent print and/or display sessions
* Ability to map IBM 101/102 key-keyboard
* Pooling sessions across multiple services and servers
* Type-ahead capability
* Access to applications needing data entry via light pen
* Access to host graphics applications
* Integrated high-speed file transfer
* International or multi-national 3270 foreign
language table support
Advanced 3270/SNA Graphics Option Captures High-Resolution
SNA Host Graphics Capabilities For DOS PCs
The VINES Advanced 3270/SNA Graphics Option (Advanced 3270/SNA is
a prerequisite) affords users the ability to print, edit, and
display high-resolution host graphics at their PCs. It provides an
economical means of accessing host applications that support
graphics by supporting 3279-S3G (programmed symbols) and 3179-G,
APA (All-Points-Addressable), data streams in a single option.
Operating Environment and Prerequisites
for VINES Advanced 3270/SNA Options
VINES Advanced 3270/SNA and Advanced 3270/SNA Graphics are
separately packaged options that require VINES Release 4.0 (or
later) software running on VINES/286, VINES/386, VINES/386 Team,
VINES SMP, VINES/486 or Banyan server platforms (BNSTM, DTSTM, CNSTM
and CNS/486TM). The VINES 3270/SNA option is a prerequisite for
Advanced 3270/SNA. Other hardware requirements are: supported DOS
clients, and appropriate adaptors for SNA host network, client, and
server connections. Advanced 3270/SNA is, in turn, a prerequisite
for advanced 3270/SNA Graphics.

First customer shipment of the VINES Advanced 3270/SNA and Advanced
3270/SNA Graphics options is planned for June 1990. Orders are now

About Banyan Systems Incorporated
Banyan Systems is the leader in corporate-wide PC networking. Banyan's premier product is VINESR, a fully-
integrated network computing environment based on industry and international standards. VINES permits
the convenient accessing, sharing, and managing of computer information and resources in distributed
systems ranging from localized PC clusters up to the largest multinational PC networks in the world.
Operating on a growing variety of popular personal computers as well as on Banyan's own family of network
servers, VINES transparently internetworks PCs, minicomputers, mainframes, and other resources with local
and wide area networks. The resultant network is secure and convenient to administer, yet it provides a
single easy-to-understand user interface at each workstation. VINES users need no knowledge of network
topology. They perceive the entire network as a virtual extension of their own PCs, and simply access
needed resources via Banyan's StreetTalkTM, the world's first and most powerful global directory service.
Banyan Systems is headquartered at 120 Flanders Road, Westboro, MA 01581. (508) 898-1000.
